Inspired by Tininess

Introduction

How do you perceive tiny things? Useless, unnoticeable, or weak?
If you have similar thoughts, you will definitely change your mind after reading this blog! In fact, tiny things can lead to great and unpredictable effects. Why? It is because EVERY EFFORT COUNTS! In this blog, we will use COINS and BUTTONS to illustrate how little things bring large impacts.

Before introducing our works of coins and buttons, we would like to share with all of you about how we come up with the ideas. We describe our thinking process as using a MIXER: putting essential ingredients, stirring, and mixing into a great work at the end. The detailed steps are as follows:
1. Putting essential ingredients – contributing valuable ideas by three of us during the brainstorming process;
2. Stirring – interacting by giving comments and opinions on each other’s ideas;
3. Mixing into a great work – combining our thoughts.
After using the mixer, we have decided our materials – coins and buttons – inspired by their small sizes. And using them, we are going to tell you a story: Every effort counts. Coins will demonstrate the individual effort while buttons will show the collective effort. Let’s develop your new perception of tininess by reading our works!

What a little coin can do, instead of buying things?

1. Making decisions with 2 choices

This is not new to you. When you find it difficult to make decisions between 2 options, you can use a coin to help you make a decision. For example, you can choose to have Chinese food or Japanese food as your lunch by tossing a coin. A coin has two sides, number side and face side. You will choose either Chinese food or Japanese food depending on which side you see as it falls on your hand.

2. As a Wobble Wedge

A coin helps stabilize tables and chairs. If you find a chair shaking when sitting on it, you can place coins on one of its leg (which is shorter than the others) to stabilize it.

3. Making a wish

In many countries, people throw coins to make a wish such as in Japan, China or Rome. People make a wish by throwing a coin onto a turtle in China, or throwing coins into a fountain in Rome to make a wish. Can you guess how many people throw coins into the Rome's Trevi fountain? There is no statistic on this information, but the Rome's Trevi fountain provides $ 600, 000 euro revenue to the Rome government per year. *1

4. Removing the iron plant

You will find there is some plant on the lucky-draw card that you need to remove so as to know what's underneath. Anyway, you cannot do it by your bare hand. It will be easier for you to use a coin to remove the plant.

5. Openning the lock

Some locks can be unlocked by a coin, like a toilet lock. If a washroom is accidently locked, you can use a coin to open it.

6. Hitting the fire alarm

If you hit the glass of the fire alarm by your bare hand, you will probably get hurt. A coin can help you to break the fire alarm without hurting your hand.

7. Covering a hole

If you find a hole, for example a hole on the wall, you can stick a coin to cover it.

8. Magic

Obviously, there are much magic related to coins. Coin is a common tool for magic, like becoming the object going to be disappeared.

9. As a Weapon

You can put many coins into a shock and it can be transform to a weapon. Once you place the coins in the shock, you can beat your enemies.

10. As a “pen” to write memo

If you want to write down something important but you do not get a pen, you can scrape a coin on the paper.

We think both coins and buttons are tiny, and seem worthless to people. But we see that people can have different perspectives on coins, and have used it in so many ways beside its basic function. It really inspires us to create other uses in a similar objective, buttons.

1. Button-pen

We can insert ink parcel into the holes of the buttons. While some buttons have 2 holes, some have four. We use a 2-hole button and insert 2 different colors of ink parcel in it. See, it is going to be a 2-color pen.

2. Button-bag

We try to use the some plastic wire and buttons to decorate a bag. We use some wires, two types of buttons to make this bag. We think that buttons should not only appear on clothes so we place them on a bad. It is not only a bag, it also is your accessory.

3. Buttle (Button & Bottle)

We stack up buttons to form a bottle. It performs as a bottle. Any pens to put inside?

4. Robot

We use buttons to build a robot. It’s fun!

5. Photo frame

We use buttons as decorations for a photo frame.

6. Cup mat

We put buttons as a rectangular shape for putting hot drinks on it.

7. Canon

We use buttons to build a canon. It can even shoot!

8. Filter

We weave the buttons and form a filter which can sieve things through the holes.

9. Memo holder

By sticking the buttons altogether, it becomes a memo holder. You can place any memos and photos on it.

Individual thinking and inspiration and group processes

We have a lot of ideas. However, it is more important to know how we generate the ideas. Here is the process. Firstly, we started by individual thinking. When our team tried to think of the materials to use, we dreamed on our own. We were inspired by anything without any limitation. Then, we came to anecdote circle*2. Our group sat together and shared our own stories. During the sharing section, we gave feedbacks and added new ideas to others’ stories immediately. We called this process as “stirring”. That is when one idea came out, we discussed on it and generated more ideas. As it was a continuous process, more and more ideas were stirred up.

Moreover, you might wonder how we further develop our creativity journal from the inspirations, that is the collection of ideas and things that inspired us *3. Our group thought that, life is the origin of creativity, creativity came up from our living. We started to brainstorm ideas from life situations. For example, people always face tradeoff, this led us to think of the two sides of a coin and got one use of decision-making. Also, human beings are weak, compared to other animals in the world. Then we thought that we could make use of the hardness of the coins to help us in our life, such as breaking the fire alarm glass.

After that, we started to work on existing ideas and thought continuously. That is to build new and similar ideas on the existing ones. For example, the hardness of coins could have more uses. We then came up with the use of opening a lock. This was useful to think continuously and get more similar ideas.

Besides, we also tried to think oppositely in order to break the boundaries and produce more ideas. Our group once came up with an idea that "circle is perfect", but the holes on the buttons mark an incompleteness to a perfect circle. However, can incompleteness create room for creativity? As we think in this way, we created the filter using the buttons. We considered the holes of buttons to be an advantage in this case.

By repeating group thinking process, we developed the above ideas of different uses and objects.

Enablers and Inhibitors

When we are creating the objects by buttons and thinking of the different uses of the coins, we have some enablers, which facilitate our thinking process and also some inhibitors, which limit our creativity and innovation.

For enablers, the group itself is a good enabler. Many feathers make a bed. If we group all the ideas together, they can be formed as a bigger piece of work. An individual has creative ideas, a group can produce more. If an individual idea is not complete, a group can make it better. For example, one of our teammates pointed out that we can make use of the holes of the buttons to build the object. Other teammates kept stirring up the ideas and finally built the filter. This is how a group can enable the creativity process.

On the other hand, there are inhibitors. For example, we were restricted because of the original uses of the objects. The buttons are used on clothes - this is a normal way of thinking among all of us. When we built the objects, we always thought about the clothes and could not get rid of it. This took us times to break the boundaries and think of different possible objects can be built. However, this situation has improved as we built the first object - we could already break through the boundaries and think beyond the normal ways *4.

Financial constraint is another inhibitor. As our group uses the buttons to build the objects, we have to use some buttons as our materials. Buying the buttons became a problem to us. Since we did not purchase massively, the unit price of the buttons were quite high. If we purchase massively, we cannot afford the total cost. More importantly, we had only three teammates to share the costs. As a result, restricted by our budget, we could only purchase a few buttons with limited styles, sizes and colors. This limited our creative ideas to be materialized.

Our selection process

In our group thinking process, there were many ideas generated. By selection, we have rejected some of our ideas. For example, when we thought about the cohesive story of our blog, we thought of the "Strengths comes from Cohesion". However, we did not adopt this idea because it is hard for us to think of many uses which require us to joining the coins together.

Conclusion

Indeed, every effort counts. Apart from the ordinary use, coins have more potential uses than we usually think; buttons can form great works beyond our imagination. Similarly, every one of us has own strengths and certainly we have a lot more potential competence; on the other hand, as we co-operate with each other, synergy effect can be resulted. Although we come across obstacles in the meantime, problems become easier to be solved when we bring our thoughts to the group. This is the power of a MIXER.

First of all, thank you for all your comments. Your comments do serve as the enablers for creativity too. It is because there are much more ideas that we have not come up with. The comments are also our motives to work better as I know all of you really put efforts in making comments. Responding to the your comments, our group has made this revision into four parts.

Firstly, we see many comments questioning about the feasibility of the uses and objects in real life. If you guys have read our first blog, you will notice that we have differentiated creativity from innovation. Creativity is not necessarily practical as innovation. You may refer back to our first blog and we are not going to further elaborate it here. The main point we want to share is that "don't restrict the traditional thinking!" We believe when Edison was inventing the light bulb, every one said, "Why don't we just use the candle? It is good enough!" However, if there is no such creative idea from Edison, we have no lighting today. Yes, we know that it is always the minority to come up with creative ideas which the majority bans. However, sometimes, a sound-like non-practical idea can actually be practical after further improvements. We appreciate your suggestions to modify our ideas. This is the process of changing creativity into innovation and it is also an extension of group thinking. This should be a good opportunity for creativity.

Second, we want to point out that most of our ideas are practical. For example, using the coin to hit the fire alarm glass is really usable. If you know the design of the fire alarm, you should know that, for safety purpose, glass is easily breakable by just using your finger to add pressure to the white spot.
Our design is to protect your finger not to get hurt only. In case all of you don't know about that, we want to tell you this safety measure. Moreover, some of you suggest we can simply use our shoes to break the glass. However, not everyone wears high-heel shoes, and perhaps, even some of them wear slippers. Normal shoes and slippers are too large which actually reduce the pressure when hitting the alarm (according to basic physics theory). At that point, a coin would be something handy and hard enough object to generate great pressure.

For the idea of button pen, buttons are in many different sizes, we do find the buttons with the big-enough-hole size. However, if we merely purchase six to seven of them, it costs $5 each. We thought it was too expensive therefore we refused to buy. You can simply insert the ink parcel in the hole and it works as a pen, you can change the color so easily by just inserting ink parcel with different colors.

There are more feasible ideas, but it will make the revision too long. So we just pick one from the uses and objects. If you are really interested in any product or use, do contact our group during lesson and we are glad to further explain it to you. As we have mentioned earlier, we welcome discussion to make a creative ideas innovative. =]

Thirdly, some of you suggested that we should collect buttons instead of buying to eliminate the financial constraints. Our group loves to collect the buttons, yet owing to the time constraint, it is hard for us to collect enough buttons to build the objects. Just like the robot, we were actually building it, but because of inadequate buttons, we cannot finish it. However, we did have used some collected buttons. The materials we used for the photo frame are not purchased but collected by ourselves.

Lastly, for the comment from Keung, we are quite sad to see this piece of comment. When our group worked on this project, we did not think of the grade at all. The process itself is so interesting and worth learning. If people really aimed at the high grade and did this as the normal assignment, I am sorry that you cannot get much from this course. This is because you limited your works and learning to only a grade. Possibly it may be your aim but to us, this is a great inhibitor to creativity.

Thanks for reading our blog again and hope you can get something from it.

  1. Thank you for sharing the creativity use of coins and buttons. Your group has provided a lot of ideas about the uses of coins and buttons. I love most of them, for example the photo frame, it is really a novel idea that I have never thought before. However, for the idea of building a robot with coins and buttons, I want to know how it works and what is the uses of the robot as it seems the robot is difficult to build and not quite useful in our daily life.
In addition, I appreciate that your group has provided a lot of interesting picture and video that illustrate the idea. Those videos and pictures can really help us to understand your ideas more easily. Good job!

  3. Thank you for sharing this great blog.

Your team mentioned lots of uses of coins. All of them are very interesting and funny. Also, your blog is eye-catching because you post a lot of photo on your blog. However, I wonder that the effectively of using a coins to cover a hole and as a weapon. I think it is difficult to use the coin to cover the hole because the coin is difficult to “stand up”. Even it can, it is easily to blow it down by wind. Moreover, if the shape of the hole is not a circle, the coin cannot use to cover a hole. So, I think it is impossible to use coin to cover the hole. Moreover, your idea about “put many coins into a shock and it can transform to be a weapon” is interesting, but I think it may hurt ourselves first before use it attack someone. What do you think?

Last but not least, I don’t understand the “Button-pen” concept introduced by your team. Could you elaborate more?

Thank you for reading my comments.

  4. Thank you for sharing

I like your blog very much! Your blog provide us with many photo and video to illustrate your ideas so that we can have better understand of your objects. I like your idea of using buttons to build a canon which can even shoot. It is just like a toy which is very interesting and funny.

However, I do not understand how we can use a coin to hot the firm alarm. I do not think using a coin can break the glass. Have you even tried it? Also, you mention that putting many coins into a sock as a weapon, but I think the sock will be very heavy after you place many coins into it. Do you think it will make us very inconvenient to hit our enemies? In addition, I think, sometimes, it is hard to see your words and may not draw other’s attention to what you write if you use a coin as a pen to write a memo.

Anyway, you do a good job. Thanks for your reading.

  5. Hey,,

I liked your reading very much. Only because it made so many people question your blog about your ideas and it's usability, effectiveness, feasibility, applicability etc.. but to me thats not whats important here, the idea was to illustrate creative uses of materials. And that is exactly what they've shown here, a wide range of ideas that no one has ever thought about. Like the idea of putting coins in a sock to use as a weapon? genius! it's not the most effective solution but it's creative. The use of a coin to break the glass of the fire switch? never thought of that, will probebly use that idea actually. Your blog was informative, educational and creative! I applaud you for having such a wide range of ideas.

  6. Thanks for sharing this blog. I really like your idea that small things can also have large impacts. Some objects though are small in size have tremendous functions actually. Just like salt, it is also very tiny. Yet, it is so important to us that we’ll die if we lack salt in our body. What’s more, apart from being a kind of flavouring, salt has other uses like for massaging and peeling, preventing fresh fruit from being oxidized. Therefore, it’s really true that amazing uses of small objects cannot be neglected.

I appreciate all the uses of coins and buttons that you could think of. Despite their feasibility, some ideas and your drawings are really funny. I just have an additional use of coins to suggest. Tiny coins can also be used to make accessories like bracelets and earrings. I did see these at some accessory stores. =)

  7. Thank you very much for your great ideas. I really wonder why you only three guys can generate so many creative uses of coins and buttons. You are so powerful!!

Of all the creations, I am particularly fond of the canon. It is so cute and creative! I have never imagined a canon can be associated with buttons. Yet, I can't really see its design and operation clearly. So I think it would be a good idea if you could explain it further or give it to me and have a check on it myself~

For the memo holder, it is again a creative and useful idea. I think sooner or later it will over take the place of blu tack in the memo-substitute market (provided that it is marketized at the end~).

Nevertheless, frankly, the design of the photo frame is a bit like...those appear in funeral..I think it is the problem of the colors. Still, it is a useful and creative design that can be hand-made to friends as gifts.

  8. Wow…thank you so much for sharing your genius ideas. This is interesting ideas that I never thought before. I can’t image that a button can create such an enormous utility in the daily life. I really neglect this powerful function of a BUTTON.

By the way, I was very impressed of your ideas. It is very creative in certain area. For example, the ideas of making double color pens and the card holder stand. You guys can try to think of more ideas and start to begin your business by making up this tiny buttons. Or you can modify it to make an extremely huge button instead of a stack of button when u make things.

I think you guys have delivered an important message to the audience implicitly. It is telling us that tiny efforts can contribute a lot, so don’t try to neglect yourself as an inability and incompetent person. It is very common when it comes to the environmental protection problems. People will sometimes think that their effort doesn’t court very much and still act so selfishly. For instance, turn on the air-conditioning in summer. People may reckon that the others will still turn the air-conditioning on when I turn it off. There is no use of saving energy by a little effort. Therefore, they will keep turn it on. If this is the case, the energy will deplete soon.

You can try to link your creative ideas to the promotion of saving the environment. Especially spread the message to the primary kids. It is hard for them to assimilate principles or concepts in books, it is a little bit bored for them. So by incorporating these funny things and teaching them the meaning behind, they will definitely learn more. This is just what I felt when I was reading you guys blog. Thank you once again for making this creative and inspiring blog. :)

  9. Wow, thank you for your group sharing. It is very interesting and creative. =]
And most of the design can apply in our daily life and something I never think it before. Hahahah!! The most I like that is to stabilize the tables and chairs because I just use the paper to fix it. All designs are useful and good ideas.

But I confused that the design and the functions of the button-pen, can your groups give more details about it?

In my opinions, different people have different personality and suggestions, so when people have brainstorm together, it can create a greater power and widen the thinking and views from each other. As a result, it can make more creative and high quality of the products, and also the group members have a common goal so that they can reduce the chance of rework that wasting the time and materials.

I agree that ‘life is the origin of creativity, creativity came up from our living’. One of the reasons that I love these designs is to create the recycle culture and trend in our community. Everyone can use their creativity to produce many unique products from their own. In fact, many new, innovated products are come from our creativity to satisfy our needs. Therefore, creativity not only improve our daily life and make a higher quality of life, but it also contribute on our environment that we use recycle materials and take action to protect our earth.

Eventually, your blog not only show the group creativity, the blog also remind people try to use their own creativity and recycle materials so that we can put effort of protecting environment together.=]

  10. I like your blog because the colorful photos and video!! Photos can help to describe the creative use of coins instead of just using words.

It is funny that using coins to act as a weapon.
However, I cannot go along with your concept that using coins to hit the firm alarm. It is because coins are too small, and your reason for using coins is to avoid getting hurt. By using the small coins it is no different to use our bare hand. And why we do not use our shoes instead of using the coins?

I understand the concept of button pen, but is it really particle? The hole of button needs to be big enough to insert the ink. And the pen may not comfortable to use, because the button is too big to cover what we are going to write.

  11. Thank you for your group illustrated your creative thought. It is really interesting.

First of all, I appreciate that your group could think of a lot of ways in using coins and making new items out of buttons. I am particularly interested in using buttons to make canon and memo holder, because they are really usable and I never thought of them before. However, I think using buttons to make a cup mat for hot drinks may not be suitable because buttons are not hot-resistance so it may melt, in case a hot drink is put on the buttons mat. Therefore, I partially agree with some of the above commenters that it would be better if your group could also consider the real possibility of using those creative items. However, I thought your group is in the right approach because I also think that think and imagine more can really help and inspired to be more creative, just like what 2411genesis said above.

I agree that we are sometime limited by the existence use of the goods. It really affects our sense of creativity and innovative. Therefore, I always support that people should always think from different angels and think out of the box. This is also one of the reasons that I am appreciated for your work, because I could find a lot of new ideas here. I suppose members in your group have really thought out of the box.

I love your videos because they are very clear and understandable. Each video show each item or use respectively. However, I think it could be improved in the way that showing your thinking process of those items. For example including the process of how your group builds the canon in the video which is particularly for introducing canon. It can help the viewers to make one at home if they really love your idea.

Anyway, your group has done a great job. I am waiting for your next blog in the future. Thank you.

  12. Firstly, I would like to appreciate on your group’s metaphor “Every effort counts” which reflects that you treasure every small thing and indicate the importance of teamwork. One button is not influential, but collection of buttons can build lots of useful materials and beautify our daily life. I used to relate button to clothes, but after reading your great blog, I find that buttons have many interesting alternative uses. I am not a confirmative person, so it is a good idea to use coins to make decisions.

Furthermore, you mention in your blog that financial constraint is one of your group inhibitors, but you only abandon another metaphor of “strength comes from cohesion” in your selection process. Do you have any ideas for alternative uses of button but failed to make because of financial constraints?

Moreover, you purchase buttons from shops to demonstrate different uses. But why don’t you collect buttons from other people? I usually collect buttons from unworn clothes so I have plenty of them at home. I think it is more cost-effective to recycle buttons to create other materials, rather than purchase buttons to make other things.
Besides, I wonder if button pen is practical or not. It sounds quite uncomfortable to hold a pen which has the shape like button to write anything. But I think it is a good attempt because it is very convenient to bring 2-color pens with us instead of bringing many color pens. I suggest that you can redesign the packages of button pens to make them more attractive. Moreover, I like the idea of “Buttle” as it has a similar sound of Chinese name "penholder".

  13. Thank you for sharing.
You think different ideas of the uses of coins and buttons, and you take lots of video to show us the uses, it is a good ideas for you to separate it in different video because we can choose what we want to watch and not necessary to watch all of them. Also, it is attractable since there are lots of pictures and video but not just words.

However, the uses of the coins are too simple and not creative, like Remove the iron plant, Make decision with 2 choices and Make a wish. These kinds of uses are what we usually using now, so I think you should think more and some special examples.

Moreover, I think the Button-pen is not easy to make it. Have you ever tried it? Although we can insert ink parcel into the holes of the buttons, the holes are too small and it is not possible to insert different color of ink parcel in it.

I think the canon is really lovely and it is funny that it can shoot the button but you should make it to be easier to control and it can shoot all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Your group gathered lots of creative ideas that I highly appreciate.

As for your blog, you demonstrate a clear theme. You have mentioned your theme in the blog and the products can relate to your theme. It is great as you have a consistent content. I can easily follow the flow you’re going.

As for the weapon, I think it is not a problem and after all it is a creative idea. However, I think it is better if creative is something useful and safety. Positive creativity can make our life better while creative with bad use, it may degrade our life. The weapon can be a reference as a product but better not to use it in our daily life. We may improve it into a more useful and safety product.

Furthermore, the group and individual thinking, they are the complement. You can suggest some ideas that the person lack of. It helps develop other ideas as well. Therefore, I agree with the individual and then group thinking.

Finally, for buying the button, what lemontea524 said is a good point. I wonder if you use lots of button to make a new product, why we don’t buy it in the market directly. For example, you made a photo frame. You can buy it in a shop. It can not only save time but also be more convenience. Therefore, it is better for you to make full use of some recycle materials. It is a concern that your group should aware of.

Anyway, I like the ideas your group mentioned. Keep going! Thanks=)

  15. Thanks for your sharing! Your blog really interesting and fun!

You guys are really full of ideas! However, I have some doubts towards the practicability of some ideas. For example, use the coin to stabilize the tables and chairs. How can you make sure that the thickness of the coin is exactly suitable? For me, I simply use a paper to stabilize the chairs, because you can change the thickness of the paper easily by folding it until it fits exactly. And for the button pen, I can’t get your point. Why bother to insert them into the holes of buttons while you can easily draw different colors with ink parcels? And you’ve got to use two colors at the same time with such a pen and cannot write correctly. Personally I think it’s also very difficult to find an ink parcel fit the width of the holes of buttons exactly.

However, I do agree with your idea that everything can make a difference, no matter how small it is! Like the “a penny a day” strategy, it really makes a big difference in the long term! And I also appreciate that you “tried to think oppositely in order to break the boundaries and produce more ideas”. Think differently and take all the assumptions away, you can probably get more ideas!

What’s more, I do enjoy your videos!Especially the “canon” one. What’s the model number of your camera? The video is really of good quality!

By the way, the washroom door in your home seems not safe at all! Anyone with a coin can open it! I was totally shocked when I was watching the video!! I’m probably gonna check it out when I can see this kind of doors somewhere. -.-

Thanks again for sharing such an innovative and informative blog with us!

  16. Thanks for your entry.

I like your entry because you all can clearly introduce the creative uses of coins with the help of funny pictures and video. There are many phenomenons that I have noticed before, but I never make use of it to any applications. Thus, this entry really inspires me a lot.

Also, what I would like to share is to add value. A coin alone is only with monetary value, but we can add value to this little coin, when we make use of our creative thinking. Just like the examples shown above. This shows that adding value to a material is another way to utilize that material. This can help us to reduce material and be more environmental friendly.

    Thanks for reading it

  17. You guys have shown the wide range of uses of coin and button to the audience. I really like the ideas of button but not the coins since it is impossible to apply it. For the uses of the coins that you’ve mentioned, I know a lot of them except as a weapon and hit the fire alarm. But I am sure we would not use the coins to hit the alarm in emergency. Most of them are fun and creative but unable to use in practical.

The cannon is built by the buttons, it’s really nice. I am sure that kids would love it so much because even as old as me, I still think that it is interesting. You guys should write the proposal to the toys companies suggesting them use the buttons as toys which can help in developing the creativity of kids.

And buttons can be widely used, like what your group said, as memo holder, photo frame, cup mat, etc. In my point of view, it can also be used in the fashion like necklace or other accessories since they’re colourful. It is easy for people to make it by themselves. What do you guys think?

I appreciated all of the videos are taped by your group. In my suggestions, you should add music on them so audience would not hear any noise from the background. Anyway, I have a lot of fun reading your group’s blog. Thanks!

  18. Some of your creative uses of buttons are drawn, some are built. Actually this is a good way to get rid of "financial difficulties" you mentioned. You may like to include this as "how do you get rid of these inhibitors" in respond to the assignment's specification.

Another way to get rid of financial difficulties is "linking up with someone who has a successful track record of getting support from investors", according to Mark Rice in Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Where do good ideas come from -- Revisited (see assigned readings). It is especially true for innovations, where you have to make your creativity real and profitable.

And, just for fun, you may like to relate your ideas with some latest research or news. Say, the usage of coin in helping decision-making may be related to this finding:

    http://www.mercurynews.com/49ers-headlines/ci_13579962?nclick_check=1

Where researchers from Stanford and UC-Santa Cruz claim that the probability of getting head(tail) by tosing coins may not be 50 percent.

Your theme on creative uses and projects- every effort counts reminds me of the 80/20 rule. Yes, every effort counts, but 20 percent of your effort may account for 80 percent of your performance. An intepretation will be, you need to work really hard to get that remaining 20% of performance. If you want one or two subgrade(s) higher, you will need much more effort above the effort given out. Applying to your case, working more and ellaborating more in individual and group processes, enablers and inhibitors will make your assignment from an A- or A one to and A+ one.

For such an excellent job, I cannot believe that there is only one enabler: group. Many people work in group, but not all of them can be synergized into team. If you consider group as a key enabler, you should ellaborate more on team-builting.

Compare to your explanation on group process, individual process are described quite briefly. You should mention some techniques or skills in the individual process, or else other may think that all your inspirations come up in the accidental way (see What is creative thinking? on http://www.brainstorming.co.uk/tutorials/creativethinking.htm).

  19. Thank you ISEE for sharing so much very great ideas with us. I think I would have never thought about using coins and buttons.

I think that as it is very simple objects, we don t think so much about it. Yes congratulation for choising that because most of the time we try to find complicated things instead of using the very basic.

Yes, we everytime have so some coins and we do not know what to do with ( yes that the same in europe!!! ;) ) Most of the time we have it in a small plate were we put every things we don t use :)

I think that one of the aventages of coins and buttons is that there are almost circular and flat. Thus we can make a lot of things with :)

I really liked your small car. Was very smart!
    Good toy!

With may cousins (we are 6) when we want to play a game as Monopoly, we never have dice (we always lost it. We take six coins in our hands and throw it. I we use 'Face' and if you have 4 faces is like having 4 on a dice!

    so useful :0

thank you so much of it.
take care and give us other ideas

  20. Hi again~ Isee! I enjoy your great presentation and videos. As your group said if anyone does not visit your website then it will be his/her loss, I decide to have a look and find it very interesting.

I like your group’s idea that utilizing small or tiny things to create big impact. I think this is the responsibility of everyone of the creativity class to develop great and complicated ideas with things we could find in our daily life. I appreciate your group’s effort but can your group create a major story line or theme to link all the different uses of coins and buttons, the metaphor and any other ideas behind. I would be glad if you consolidate those ideas and write a clear story line to the audience, thank you.

  21. Thank you for your sharing.

I agree with you that the group itself is a good enabler of creativity. Since different people have different perspective and mind, they can inspire each other and generate more ideas. But I think the most important thing is that how you manage the individual and your group processes to gain the advantages. A group can be an enabler but also can be an inhibitor.

Many creative ideas are come from one person instead of a group. For example, sometimes, one painting is come from one painter. One song is come from one composer. Some creative ideas are generated by a person rather than a group of people since they need private time and space to think about the perfect points. Sometimes argument will occur because the group processes may damage the original ideas of the creator.

I have a personal experience of it. I study art in secondary school. I can design a creation by myself perfectly. But sometimes it is hard for me to create an art work in a group. It is because different ideas will make people feel confused. Also, sometimes quantity can damage the quality. In the brainstorming process, a group of people just focus on throw out a large amount of ideas but the quality of those ideas may not be good. Therefore, I think the group itself can be an enabler and an inhibitor of creativity.

I hope my idea can inspire you. Thank you. Add oil. ^^

  22. Thank you for sharing.

It is shocking for me that you can think of so many uses of those materials. I never think about that.

However, I think some of them may not be practical that it is better for you if you can use other tools instead. For example, hitting the alarm, would you really use a coin? I dont think so. I know you may want to get higher marks so think as much as possible. But, I think you can still give some practical ideas and products.

  23. WOW… Your group is so powerful since you can think of so many creative ideas of the coins and buttons. Most of them are very practical. I really appreciate your job.

In your blog, you show many videos and pictures to explain different uses of the coins and buttons. It helps the readers understand easily and it helps to attract the readers by the colorful pictures. It is great!

I really love the design of the memo holder. It does not only practical, but also beautiful. The design is simple, however, it is special. We can design our favorite memo holder by choosing different colors or different shape of the buttons. It is so easy to make one. Good idea!

On the other hand, I am doubtful whether a coin can be a pen or not. In the video, it demonstrates the use by writing on an invoice. The texture of the paper is different from normal paper. Thus, it seems that it cannot write on a normal paper.

After reading the blog, I discover that even tiny things have many contributions. Therefore, we should treasure all the things and make good use of them.

Thank you for your sharing. =]

  24. I really love your ideas about those button and coins, especially the magic part. Every time I saw a magician to play with those coins, such as they could take out as many as coins they want from anywhere, it is just amazing. I am totally blown away by those magic shows. And when I click on the video which you have put on the blog, I am blown away as well, is that you are performing that magic or just quoting some other videos? If you can really perform such magic tricks, I will definitely call you “my master”; beside, you can attract many women by those tricks, haha..

One more thing want to share with you guys, the toy cannon is really great, it really show you guys creativity, although it is just a toy, the utility is low. The point is that you guys are under too much boundary, such as time, you guys are not just taking one course, and resources, as you guys only use several buttons and coins, but you guys still can create a real fun toy, to be honest, I really admire what you have done for this assessment.

To sum up, I would like to say you guys have really put much efforts on this assessment, and I really want to say “that is great!”

  25. I am very impressed by your blog!

Firstly, it is very colourful and attracts me to read it. For the ideas part, I appreciate the ideas given by you. They are useful! For instance, I like the button bag very much because it will be unique if I make a bag like that. It is quite hard for me to think of some special gifts for my female friends when their birthdays come. I think the drawing is very nice and clear. Also, the photo frame is very pretty in that you can make it by using buttons with different colours. Whenever there is orientation camp, I think I can make some photo frames for my sons and daughters and only little efforts are needed. Yet, different people will receive a unique gift. It is really nice!

On the other hand, I can see that you have put much effort in this blog because you demonstrate most of the ideas by yourselves by preparing your own videos, drawings and photos instead of finding the resources online. I can see that all of your ideas are workable. For the theory part, I think you can try to find more references to support your works.

Well done! And thank you again for such a creative blog! Every effort counts!

I do agree that tiny things can make a great change for all of us!
Just link up to the issue of protecting the earth, people may think that one's effort is not enough to make any changes for protecting our living environment. But I think they are totally wrong! If everyone is willing to pay effort and make the changes,I am sure that our earth will be more "healthy" with less damages.Everyone should believe in himself/herself and do not look down on his/her "little" effort!

Moreover, everything is actually made up of tiny effort.Just like saving money, you may have a chance to become a millionaire if you save one dollar every day!So we should really not look down on every tiny effort!

    Thank for the sharing again!

  27. Hi ISee,
I am Kenny from the Language Clinic. I agree with the comments you receive above.

I am supposed to give comments regarding three aspects to you guys, which are "clarity of ideas", "coherence" and "support of evidence".

For “clarity of ideas”, it is crystal clear that you are demonstrating your inspirations of tiny objects around us. For this blog entry, you focused on buttons and coin. With the help of sketches, photos and videos, every visitor of your blog can instantly know what ideas you are presenting, even though he or she may not be a good English user. Frankly speaking, I am really impressed. Sometimes, graphics or videos present ideas much better than words!

For “coherence”, of course, the whole blog is written in a very coherent manner. You are always referring to creative and innovative ideas. I have no doubt about this.

For “support of evidence”, you did show the list of references which you had referred to. I guess they are the sources of background knowledge you had for creating this blog entry. The graphics and videos are absolutely the best things you did to demonstrate your ideas.

Overall, I would say I am deeply impressed by the work you have done. I hope I can learn more from you to make myself a more creative person. :)
